Continuing Our Learning in Community Roles.

Dear Parents,

A reminder that this Thursday, September 1st, will be reserved for goal setting meetings with teachers for Jardins Europa campus.  This Friday, September 2nd, is Pinheiros campus' goal setting meetings. If you haven't signed up, please do so as soon as possible.

READ TO SELF
The students have spent time enhancing their "Read to Self" skills in class.  They are learning to choose good fit books which are characterised as books they can read and understand.  Our current stamina goal is 5 minutes, however we hope to increase it as we progress through the school year.

Wants and Needs

This past week, the students learned about the differences between wants and needs.  We made posters in class to display our own personal wants and needs.  This is connected to the unit by explaining that community jobs are created by our own wants and needs.

Identifying Community Roles
The students also spent time describing and identifying many of the community helper roles within a community.  The final product were posters made by the students.

Second week of learning...

Dear Parents,

Our kids seem very adapted to their new year level!

Children have been working on new reading strategies in Language, spelling patterns and the structure of fiction stories... it has been a pleasant start on writing!

They have also been working with Chrome books, exploring technology...take a look at the pictures below.

Thank you all for offering to bring in professionals in our communities. The children will benefit tremendously from the possible visits. We're positive it will be a successful opportunity for them to evidence the different roles within communities.

Welcome to Week 2!

By now students are becoming more accustomed to the new routines for their PYP 4 class.  After a week of settling in, the students are ready to focus on their Unit of Inquiry, Language, and Math.

In Unit of Inquiry:

Students have begun defining a community.  Through brainstorming and collaborative efforts, we have discussed that a community is a group of people who come together to help each other.

Language:

The Daily 5 has recently been introduced to students.  Each class is learning the necessary skills to become an independent reader.  This week's task was learning how to "Read to Self."

Some useful tips:  Finding a good reading spot and not moving from it
                               Focus on reading only
Choosing a book that you can understand the words and comprehend

Math:

We have begun comparing numbers by using the Greater Than, >, and less than, <, symbols.  Students have also learned how to make a two-digit number, ex. 24, 53, from a list of several digits.  We have placed them onto a number line in order from smallest to largest.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to PYP 4!

We hope you all had an amazing and restful holiday and that the children are full of energy to get back to learning!

Our first Unit of Inquiry's central Idea is

There is interdependence between the different roles in a community.

Lines of Inquiry:
Needs and interaction in a community;
Function of structures and organizations in a community
Cooperation between parts of a community
We will be working on the following Key Concepts:
Function: How are the different roles in a community interdependent?
Connection: How are public services connected to each other?

The Related concepts are :
Needs and wants
Community
Citizenship

So, if you know of any parent who works in a hospital, in a Police Dept, please let us know... It would be great to have someone talking to the kids about the importance of cooperation and interdependence within a community. Please spread the word!

This year children have homework every Wednesday and should bring it back on the following day.
